Alzheimer’s disease, also known as senile dementia, is a chronic, progressive degenerative disease with no cure. It is characterized by loss of recent memory for events, persons, and places. Over time, confusion and disorientation increase, leading to physical deterioration and death.
Diagnosis is made by history and ruling out other causes. Autopsy studies of the brain show neurofibrillary tangles, neuritic plaques, and granulovascular degeneration. Some researchers are looking into new treatments to alter the course of the disease and improve the quality of life for people suffering from the disease.
The United States Food and Drug Administration has approved two different types of medications to treat cognitive symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Cholinesterase inhibitors act to prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger used for learning and memory. Another medication Memantine (Namenda) works to regulate the activity of glutamate, different messenger chemicals that are involved in learning and memory.
Some doctors recommend taking vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps to protect nerve cells from certain kinds of chemical breakdown.
Many sufferers experience trouble sleeping. Some non-drug treatments for sleep changes include maintaining regular routines for mealtimes, bedtimes, and rising times. It is important to get sunlight exposure and spend time outside in the fresh air. Light, daily exercise helps to release stress, relax, and sleep better. Avoiding alcohol, caffeine and nicotine also helps for a more restful sleep. Keep the room where the person sleeps at a cool, comfortable temperature, and provide nightlights and security objects for comfort. It is also important to turn the television off at least one hour before bedtime to allow for a relaxing environment. Reading, or being read to, helps.
Other alternative treatments include using supplements such as Coenzyme Q10, an antioxidant that is needed for normal cell reactions. Coral calcium supplements have been heavily marketed as a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Ginkgo biloba is a plant extract containing several compounds that have positive effects on cells within the brain and body.
These are just a few ideas currently in circulation for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
